What Causes Difficulty Walking? Learn about Peripheral Artery Disease, PAD
Peripheral artery disease, also known as peripheral arterial disease, is a common circulatory problem in which narrowed arteries reduce blood flow to limbs. When people have peripheral artery disease, their extremities, usually the legs, don’t receive enough blood flow to keep up with demand. This causes symptoms like leg pain when walking. This disease is also likely to be a sign of a more widespread accumulation of fatty deposits in your arteries. The condition may be reducing blood flow to the heart and brain, as well as the legs.
Many people with PAD have mild or even no symptoms. However, there are some people have claudication symptom which is leg pain when walking. Symptoms of claudication include muscles pain, cramping in legs that is triggered by activity like walking, but disappears after a few minutes of rest. Other symptoms and signs of PAD include leg numbness or weakness, coldness in lower legs, sores on your toes, feet or legs that won't heal, a change in the color of your legs, etc.
There are some risk factors that may result in the PAD. Smokes, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, increasing age (especially for those who are over 50s) family history of PAD and other factors may cause PAD to happened.
Nowadays, there are some efficient ways to solve the disturbing disease. First way is medication treatment. Doctors will depend on different situations of patients to give prescription. However, in some cases, angioplasty or surgery may be necessary to treat PAD.
In order to prevent PAD, to maintain a healthy lifestyle is very important. That means: stop smoking, exercise, maintain a healthy weight, eat a healthy diet, etc.
